The local government of Manacor, conscious of the distinction of Antoni Maria Alcover i Sureda and his works, agreed to create a Public Institution with his name as a memorial and a tribute, with the aim of encouraging the scientific and philological study of his figure, and honouring our culture and values.
The Institution is based in the stately home of Can Socorrat, 12 Pare Andreu Fernández St. in Manacor. Contact phone number: 662 32 04 44.
The principal objectives of the Public Institution are, on the one hand, the preservation, collection and scientific use of Antoni Alcover’s legacy; and, on the other hand, the study, research and promotion of Majorcan folklore and oral heritage.
From these basic goals, the Institution works along two parallel lines:
- A scientific line, which aims at offering a space for studies around philological issues and Alcoverism. This is achieved through the Bolletí de la Institució Pública Antoni M. Alcover (Antoni M. Alcover Public Institution Bulletin) and the City of Manacor Prize, among others.
- A divulgation line, which approaches the public the figure of Antoni M. Alcover, popular culture and, especially, folktales.
